Upcoming International Transit Studies Program Missions The International Transit Studies Program (ITSP) conducts two missions each year to provide transit managers from across the US the opportunity to examine public transportation practices in other countries and regions. The program is sponsored by the Transit Cooperative Research Program, funded by the Federal Transit Administration, and managed by the Eno Foundation.
Fall 2008: "Balancing Infrastructure Reinvestment with System Expansion" The Fall mission team will travel to Australia to learn about transit systems of various sizes, where managers have faced tough resource allocation decisions in the face of competing demands to upgrade existing facilities and services and develop new capacity. Agencies will be identified that are committed to operating on both the reinvestment and expansion "tracks" and have a record of managing effectively. Special attention would be given to small starts and the development of regional rail service. Team members will study techniques used in planning, budgeting, financing, organizational design, project management, and communications with staff and the public. Karen King, chief executive officer of Golden Empire Transit District of Bakersfield, CA, will lead the team. The mission will take place over the period, October 17-November 1, 2008. Nominations for Fall team members are currently being accepted. The deadline to receive nominations is Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 5:00pm (EDT). Twelve team members will be selected from the nominations received. All candidates will be notified of the ITSP oversight panel's decisions by the end of August. participants will travel to Southeast Asia to study their quality control
procedures as they relate to management practices, operations and maintenance.
The mission team will meet with transit professionals in the host cities
to learn how they set performance requirements, what they are, what steps
they take to achieve them, and how they are used to evaluate performance.
The group will focus on how the host cities use performance The spring mission will take place over a two-week period during the months of March through June 2009. Exact dates will be set once a team leader is selected.
With the increase in transit system ridership, transit agencies will need to effectively manage the service demand. Fall mission participants will travel to transit agencies in South American countries that have demonstrated the ability to manage their increased demand in a variety of areas across a variety of services. The group will explore coordinated approaches to congestion mitigation, innovative commuting patterns and marketing campaigns to make existing and potential riders aware of new services. During their visits with host organizations, the group will discuss the use of incentives to spread ridership demand, smarter use of the existing system and what new services are being created for commuters. The fall 2009 mission will be held during a two-week period in September-November.
