RECENT MISSIONS Spring 2008: Public Transportations Role in Addressing Global Climate Change Over the period May 9-23, 2008, Fred Hansen, General Manager of Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, lead the ITSP mission team to Ireland, Germany, Italy and Spain to meet with transit leaders who have pioneered environmentally sensitive practices in their operations and the development of new projects and have worked to integrate transit into community land use planning. Topics addressed by the team included: emissions; the connection between land use and transportation / transit, with particular emphasis on Transit Oriented Development; heavy recyclables; green capital facilities; and transit's possible role in a carbon reduction regime. Fall 2007: Innovative Practices in Transit Workforce Development Fourteen transit professionals from across America took part in a 2-week study mission that focused on innovative practices in workforce development. Over the period November 3-16, 2007, the mission team led by Ron Barnes, SW Regional VP of Veolia Transportation, visit transit organizations in Toronto and Montreal, Canada; Bordeaux, Paris, and Jouy de Moutier, France; and Brussels, Belgium. They studied how leaders outside the US are addressing critical challenges in the recruitment, retention, training, and management of skilled employees. selected presentations by overseas hosts. Spring 2007: Emergency Preparedness, Response & Recovery in the Transit Industry The 26th
ITSP mission focused
on "Emergency Preparedness, Response & Recovery in the Transit
Industry." Michael
Setzer, CEO, Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority in Cincinnati,
OH, led the team to China, South Korea, and Japan over the second half
of March 2007. The mission itinerary included visits to Hong Kong SAR,
Beijing, and Tangshan in China; Seoul and Gwacheon City in South Korea;
and Kobe and Tokyo in Japan.
Fall 2006: Rail Passenger Safety: Equipment and Technologies This
mission focused on "Rail
Passenger Safety: Equipment and Technologies in Europe", with
particular focus on commuter services in mixed traffic environments. The
trip was led by Thomas E. Margro, general manager of the San Francisco
Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART). The mission team explored vehicle
design, automatic train control systems, grade crossing technologies,
crash energy management, push-pull operations, and other risk management
techniques. The program inluded visits to Berlin, Strasbourg, Paris, and
London.

Spring 2006: Coordinated Approaches to Expanding Access to Public Transportation This mission focused on "Coordinated Approaches to Expanding Access to Public Transportation." The trip was led by J. Barry Barker, Executive Director, Transit Authority of River City (Louisville, Kentucky). The mission team examined models of coordinated networks and met with officials at transit organizations in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and France.
