THOMAS MARGRO TO LEAD FALL 2006 TRANSIT STUDIES MISSION

Thomas E. Margro, general manager of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART), has been selected as team leader for the fall 2006 mission of the International Transit Studies Program (ITSP).

The fall 2006 mission will examine rail passenger safety in Europe, with a particular focus on commuter services in mixed traffic environments. Topics to be explored include vehicle design, automatic train control systems, grade crossing technologies, crash energy management, push-pull operations, and other risk management techniques. The ITSP is part of the National Academies' Transit Cooperative Research Program and is managed by Eno.

Margro has over 30 years of rail transit experience. He was appointed general manager of BART in 1996. Before joining BART, he spent 18 years with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, working in engineering, operations, and capital projects.

Twelve transit professionals will be selected as team members to accompany Margro on the mission. The call for team member nominations will be issued in late spring/early summer 2006.
